The last Monday in May is Memorial Day when those who died on active service are remembered TV station WANE reports that for more than a decade an amateur radio group in Fort Wayne has been hosting an event in appreciation of service personnel. “A Salute to Those Who Served,” has been held over Memorial Day weekend for 13 years, with the exception of 2015 when the group held the event on the anniversary of D-Day. 05/30/2016 The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation has announced several supporting grants in furtherance of its goal of supporting the development of Amateur Radio. The grants will support the Foundation’s aim to encourage youth participation in Amateur Radio and in operating activities. To support scholarships and youth programs, grants will go to the ARRL Foundation, to fund the Yasme Foundation scholarship, and to the Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR), to support its 2017-2018 scholarship program.   The annual IARU ATV Contest is happening on Saturday/Sunday, June 11-12 and the Convention for Amateur TV (CAT 16) takes place Sept 24-25 The International Contest includes all bands from 432 MHz up and additionally, the BATC will run an ATV Contest on 71 MHz and 146 MHz at the same time, so the contest will effectively be “all bands” in the UK. The results have now been released ESA’s Education Office published the transmission frequencies of the student-built satellites that were about to be launched as part of the Fly Your Satellite! programme, and invited the radio amateur community to listen out for them. An International Space Station radio contact has been planned for Jeff Williams KD5TVQ with participants at Venta School, Carp, Ontario, Canada. The event is scheduled Monday 30 May 2016 at approximately 19:01 UTC. The amateur radio contact will be a telebridge contact operated by IK1SLD in northern Italy. 05/26/2016 An Arizona radio amateur has been unsuccessful in convincing the FCC to take a 1 × 2 vanity call sign away from its present holder and grant it to him. In the process, Joshua Babb, K6FZ, may have learned not to rely on informal advice from FCC staffers. Babb, of Maricopa, Arizona, had been trying to get the initial-suffix call sign W3JB since 2014, and he was briefly successful. The prior holder of W3JB, John K.
