08/31/2016 Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) opened its latest Amateur Radio retail outlet at the site of the former Amateur Electronic Supply (AES) headquarters store at 5710 West Good Hope Road in Milwaukee on August 27. AES closed its Milwaukee, Las Vegas, Cleveland, and Orlando outlets on July 28, following a surprise announcement 4 weeks earlier that it was going out of business after 59 years as a ham radio equipment supplier. Current cooperation between the SARL and ICASA has far outstripped the original MOU between the two organisations and was brought up-to-date last year. However due to the restructuring of ICASA and various delays in amending the ICASA delegation of authority, the signing of the MOU was delayed. While the new MOU was agreed between the SARL and the ICASA licensing structure it had to go through a new review process including various departments. The award honors long-time ARRL Communications Manager George Hart, W1NJM (SK), the chief developer of the National Traffic System™ (NTS). An ARRL Charter Life Member, Hart spent more than four decades as a member of the ARRL Headquarters staff and continued to be an active radio amateur and regular Field Day participant in his retirement. 08/29/2016     Champion RTTY contester Don Hill, AA5AU, of Louisiana may be the first US radio amateur to operate SO2R (single operator, two radio) remotely in an RTTY event. He took part in the SCC RTTY Contest over the August 27-28 weekend via W4AAW in Virginia. Already an accomplished SO2R RTTY operator, Hill ran the first 2 hours of the contest while operating SO2R remotely. The South African Radio League reports on discussions with their regulator ICASA regarding an amateur radio 5 MHz band allocation that is 100 kHz wide with 400 watts output The SARL recommendation for a 5 MHz allocation presented to ICASA earlier this year, has now received approval from the frequency spectrum department and a document is in preparation for submission to the Operating Committee. 08/29/2016 Scouting’s Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) officials are asking JOTA 2016 participants not only to register for this year’s event, but to follow up with a post-JOTA report. As an incentive, all stations filing reports will automatically be entered to win an Icom ID-51A hand-held transceiver. The 59th annual JOTA takes place October 14-16. “Last year we had 400 stations register but only 200 stations file a report,” said JOTA Coordinator Jim Wilson, K5ND. “We’re going to improve that this year. Hundreds with portable gear had a marvellous time putting former marine navigation on air during the 19th International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend held last Saturday and Sunday. Organiser Kevin Mulcahy VK2CE says thank you to all who registered for the fun-event, with some them needing to avoid contests and keep out of inclement weather. Its final result of 471 from 45 countries was excellent, says Kevin, considering unsettled conditions in some areas of the world.
