08/02/2017 Twelve-year-old Lauren Richardson, M6HLR — one of the youngest hams in England — completed the Wainrights on the Air Challenge on August 1. The Challenge is an ambitious activity that involves climbing all 214 of the Cumbrian Wainright fells — hills and mountains, described in A. Wainwright’s seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells (1955–66) — and transmitting from each summit. She completed the entire endeavor in about 2 years, hiking with her parents. Lauren was the subject of a BBC Look North TV program, which was shot as she had just one more summit to go. “When I […]

07/08/2017 At 0057 UTC on July 7, the Australian Space Forecast Centre issued a Geomagnetic Disturbance Warning: “Expect an increase in geomagnetic activity late on UT day, 08-09 July due to influence of geoeffective coronal hole.” Our Sun showed no sunspots on July 3-4, so average daily sunspot numbers dropped from 20.3 on June 22-28 to 8 during the current reporting week, June 29 through July 5. Average daily solar flux went from 73.6 to 71.7. Average daily planetary A index went from 6.9 to 7.1 and average mid-latitude A index went from 7.4 to 8.3, barely any change. Predicted […]

06/27/2016 The eighth annual 13 Colonies Special Event takes place from 1300 UTC on July 1 until 0400 UTC on July 7. Stations working the special event station in at least one of the original 13 states — or all 15 participating stations — will be eligible for a certificate. A Liberty Bell endorsement will be attached for stations contacting sister special event station WM3PEN, in Philadelphia, where independence was declared. Back this year, is a second sister station GB13COL in Durham, England. Stations will be on the air from each of the original 13 colonies — Connecticut (K2D), Delaware […]

The Haulbowline Lighthouse in Northern Ireland built in 1824 is this year’s prestigious 200th registration in the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend. The annual fun-event began in 1995 and is always held on the third weekend of August. Members of the Hilltop Amateur Radio Club in County Down, mainly operate portable, and have chosen the Haulbowline Lighthouse. The 34 metre high unpainted granite tower is on wave-washed rock, exposed only at low tide with a ‘half tide’ light for ships entering from the Irish Sea, showing that the tide was high enough for vessels to enter. Listen for its callsign […]

03/07/2016 NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported strong (G3) geomagnetic storming at 2359 UTC on March 6 in response to above-average coronal hole high-speed stream effects. “The solar wind environment has tapered since the elevated activity, and as a result the G1 Watch for 07 March has been canceled,” the SWPC said. “Earth’s geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels with isolated periods of active conditions possible for the remainder of 07 March.” According to the SWPC, during geomagnetic storms, “currents in the ionosphere, as well as the energetic particles that precipitate into the ionosphere […]

07/13/2015 The DeorbitSailCubeSat, built by researchers and radio amateurs at the Surrey Space Centre in Guildford, England, was launched into orbit on July 10. It carries a 1200 bps BPSK beacon transmitting on 145.975 MHz. The first DeorbitSail packet reports to the Surrey Space Centre came from Ken Swaggart, W7KKE, in Oregon. Nitin Muttin, VU3TYG, reported receiving signals as the CubeSat passed over India. The DeorbitSail project is a collaboration to build a 3U CubeSat with a deployable sail that will demonstrate rapid deorbiting from low-Earth orbit, taking advantage of the increased aerodynamic drag from a large deployed sail. The […]

06/29/2015 The annual Independence Day week “13 Colonies Special Event” gets under way June 30 at 1300 UTC and will continue until July 5 at 0400 UTC. The theme for the 2015 event is “Founders and Patriots of the Republic.” The object is for operators to contact 1 × 1 call sign special event stations in each of the 13 British colonies that became the US in 1776. The contact count for last year’s event was nearly 109,000. Certificates and endorsements will be available for working the 13 colonies stations, with a sticker for contacting all 13 and an endorsement […]
